In this piece I am going to share my thoughts about the negative narrative about Sudan that the Western Media outlets adopted ever since the 1990s until today.

In my monthly newsletter "Sudan Croc Dispatch" I focus on positive news MAINLY because we have excessive amount of negative and ugly news in both international and local media, which is unfair.

Everything should be balanced.I mean some countries have positive perception in international media regardless of the ugly things that happen in that country.

Take UAE for example. Do you read or hear about the imprisoned Emirati innocent citizens?

Did you hear about the Emirati innocent female citizen — Alyaa Abdelnour - who had cancer, denied treatment, and died from cancer inside prison?
NO you don’t. All you hear is how awesome Dubai is, how people can get rich fast there, how prices are low, how to have fun over there !

Take our northern neighbor Egypt too. Do you hear about the thousands of innocents who were imprisoned, tortured and killed in international media ?
NO you don’t.
All you hear, see, and read is how fantastic Egypt. The pyramids, the Nile, the museums, the touristic resorts, Om Kolthom, Egyptian cuisine, and music.

Take the USA. Do you hear about the homeless people, the poor students and adult citizens who are drowned in interest rates for the loans they took to study the university, the racism, the gun violence, the gangsters, the drug cartels, the sadistic criminal CIA practices in Guantanamo?
NO you don’t!
All you hear, see, and read is Hollywood, entertainment, San Francisco, technology, statue of liberty, New York City, liberalism, Wall street, rock music, DJ music, actors, singers, books, culture, science, NASA , and etc.

So it’s unfair and unjust that my country, Sudan have all of this negative, ugly news coverage in all newsrooms in all media outlets around and TV channels the globe for more than thirty years just because they dislike the government for whatever that reason is. If the Sudanese government is oppressive, violent, and unjust, then why are the Sundanese people punished with excessive negative storyline in the Western media outlets about their country?

If the Sudanese government is oppressive, violent, and unjust, then so as the governments of UAE, Egypt and the USA. Therefore, standards of good and evil in media should either be generalized and applied to all countries around the globe, or they should shut their mouths forever. Because double standards always destroy the human civilisations and communities.

In my opinion, Negative narratives and storylines in media outlets has the same impact of “character assassination” except it’s not a one person’s character who will get assassinated. An entire country with all of its generations in the whole country will undergo all the negative harmful drawbacks of character assassination.
